PURPOSE: The Sustainability Specialist designs, implements, monitors, and provides assistance district-wide around programs and initiatives to promote sustainability into all aspects of district operations and continually advances the district toward becoming more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research, develop, implement and evaluate sustainability practices and systems in the Corvallis School District.
Support district and school-level implementation of policies and goals related to sustainability.
Coordinate Oregon Green Schools certification in buildings.
Develop and coordinate sustainability community partnerships.
Evaluate and propose changes to school board policy or administrative regulations related to sustainability as the need is identified (e.g. based on legislation changes).
Facilitate district-wide sustainability and wellness advisory council(s) and provide support to the groups’ work efforts.
Assist in the collection and analysis of data in the district’s sustainability activities.
Prepare and review reports, planning documents and other written materials and communications for a variety of internal and external audiences.
Design and implement marketing strategies to develop an awareness of and participation in sustainability activities. This may include presentations to classes and businesses, assisting with the development of educational materials that correlate with classroom curriculum.
Actively seek student participation and work with schools to promote student engagement.
Coordinate district-wide showcases and exhibitions of student work.
Develop methods for recognizing student and school achievements in the areas of sustainable practice.
Provide professional development opportunities for staff focused on sustainability as needs are identified.
Lead grant seeking efforts in sustainability.
Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding sustainability.
Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse student, staff and community populations.
Maintain accurate, complete and confidential records as required by law and district policy and administrative regulations.
Utilize technology as related to job responsibilities.
Represent the district by attending and participating in community meetings and events.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and district inservice meetings.
Participate in activities that are related to school functions and/or the education process that occur outside the regular workday, as needed.
Take primary responsibility for pursuing and evaluating own professional growth.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintain personal appearance and hygiene appropriate to the position as defined by the district.
Meet applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.

Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in studies related to sustainability.
Experience in a position of similar responsibility and complexity, involving project management, sustainability and/or other related disciplines preferred.
Passion for sustainability, the environment, health, wellness and public education.
Teaching experience, but not necessarily required to be TSPC credentialed or in K-12.
Deep experience and knowledge of sustainability.
Thorough understanding of systems.
Experience in developing and implementing organizational change.
Experience in gathering and integrating broad input from diverse stakeholders.
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Independent self-starter with ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
Ability to see the big picture perspective and be attentive to detail, learn new things quickly, be creative in both problem-solving and idea-generation, and discern the essential from the non-essential.

Ability to travel among district facilities as needed, and, if driving, the ability to meet district driving standards.
Standard First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required.
